Hakomi is a type of experiential psychotherapy originally developed by the renowned psychotherapist Ron Kurtz in the 1970s. By orienting towards the wisdom of the body in a state of mindfulness, Hakomi inspires clients to discover and study their inner world. The goal of what we call “assisted self-study” is that by making the unconscious, conscious, we’ll have more freedom and choice in our lives.
-
In a Hakomi session, we will typically begin by arriving and taking a few deep breathes to become present. While there is space to converse or storytell as you would in a traditional talk-therapy session, Hakomi differentiates itself with its invitation to slow down into the safety of the present movement experience, drop into the body, feel your feelings, and discover what’s alive.
This shift from thinking to feeling is a cooperative venture. As the practitioner, my job is to help you non-judgmentally observe whatever you’re experiencing. I’ll invite you to get curious, close your eyes if it feels right, and go inside. As the client, your job is to report back to me about what you’re experiencing.
As you spend time in mindfulness exploring your inner world, you may notice thoughts, sensations, memories, beliefs, images, different parts of you, or maybe nothing at all. All of this is welcome. Together we’ll follow the organic unfolding, trusting that whatever wants or needs attention will present itself.

Einstein once said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” In Hakomi, we alter our consciousness by using mindfulness or simply noticing our experience without judgment. While studying gazing inwards we will still converse, the difference is that you will be sharing from a place of deeper presence and awareness.
From this place of curiosity and expanded awareness, there will be invitations to do “little experiments in mindfulness.” The experiments will help us deepen into the unconscious and can illuminate treasure troves of hidden core beliefs, memories, and feelings. These trailheads can help light up old neural pathways and allow for new or “missing experiences.”
-
Hakomi is best suited for clients who are willing to get curious about studying their inner world or clients who have the willingness to learn! No prior experience with mindfulness or meditation is needed, although clients who have this experience may find it easier initially to drop more deeply into sessions.
-
While there is no right way to "do Hakomi", there are ways to deepen and get the most out of your sessions. The more you can allow the shift from thinking/ analyzing to feeling/observing, the more likely you are to walk away with rich self-discoveries and possibilities for new ways of being in the world.

While it would be an honor to witness your medical journey, I will not diagnose, prescribe for or treat your medical conditions during our work together. I welcome the fullness of your history - physical, emotional, and spiritual and encourage you to bring this into our work together if it feels right.
